Learn MoreAre you a soft tissue therapist, movement therapist or exercise professional looking to expand your practice, grow your skills, and teach clients practical self-care with more clarity?
Introducing the Self Myofascial Release, or SMFR, programme. SMFR is the common term for using balls, rollers and other tools on the body, but ‘release’ needs careful explanation. We are not claiming that clients are literally releasing fascia or mechanically changing tissue in a simple way.
This programme teaches you how to use SMFR safely in one-to-one sessions, group classes, online appointments or in-person workshops. You will learn how to help clients explore pressure, movement and sensation in ways that may support comfort, relaxation, mobility, sleep and well-being.
With the SMFR programme, you can offer an evidence-informed self-care option that supports clients beyond the treatment room and fits alongside your hands-on work.
Our programme offers structured online learning, with in-person workshops available on request.
Practical Skills With Clearer Reasoning: This course teaches you how to use SMFR tools safely, confidently and responsibly with clients. The focus is practical technique, clear explanation and a more modern understanding of what clients may experience during self-care.
Flexible Learning To Support Your Practice: The online course allows you to study at home and work through the material at your own pace. In-person workshops can be arranged on request and may be combined with the online learning for therapists or groups who want practical guidance.
Accessible Professional Development: This programme offers a cost-effective way to add evidence-informed self-care education to your practice, supporting clients beyond the treatment room while developing your confidence as a therapist and educator.

Throughout my clinical practice, I have used Self Myofascial Release as a practical way to support people between appointments.
My interest is not only in the tools, but in how therapists teach pressure, movement and sensation with clearer reasoning. I want therapists to feel confident using SMFR in a way that supports client comfort, body awareness and confidence, without relying on outdated claims about simply releasing fascia.
Our Self Myofascial Release courses have developed over more than 20 years, with the first online course launched in 2020. Since then, the programme has helped therapists explore SMFR for themselves and teach it to clients in clinic, online, or as part of a wider self care plan.
Self Myofascial Release is an active self care approach. It helps clients take a more informed role in managing their own body, comfort and wellbeing.
I have used Self Myofascial Release regularly in my own practice and often integrate it with Yoga.
I was never a great fan of the foam roller. Like many people, I associated it with forcing pressure into the body and waiting for the discomfort to pass. Learning a more considered approach to Self Myofascial Release changed that. It helped me understand that the value is not in crushing tissue or chasing intensity, but in using pressure, movement and time in a way that feels useful, tolerable and responsive.
When you slow the process down, you can give the body time to settle. You may notice a sense of softening, ease, warmth, relaxation or improved body awareness. That experience can be valuable in itself, especially for clients who need practical ways to feel more confident and comfortable in their own body.
Self care is often treated as an extra, but for therapists and clients it should be part of the bigger picture. Self Myofascial Release offers a simple and adaptable way to take time for yourself while learning skills that can also support your clients.
One of the best parts of teaching SMFR is that you get to experience the work yourself while you are sharing it with others.
NOW IS THE TIME TO GET STARTED!
There is no better time to offer clients clear, practical self care. Therapists are now expected to explain their work with more confidence, better reasoning and less reliance on outdated tissue claims. SMFR gives you a useful way to support clients between appointments, helping them explore pressure, movement and sensation safely, while understanding that ‘release’ is an experience, not a simple mechanical change in fascia.
BOOK YOUR SMFR LEARNING TODAY Online courses are available now, with bespoke in person workshops arranged on request.Ruth taught this SMFR course with lots of practical workshopping on ourselves. We all had good amount of space to work in. She keeps the group flowing and there is a positive "I Can Do" attitude. Really good amount of time for questions, I loved the way that she did some of the theory aspect of what we were doing to when we were balancing on the roller/ball/peanut etc so it was going in subliminally. Very professionally run with a bright and approachable manner as well as a bit of humour. Great workbooks with explanations and fabulous images. All in all, great value for money, learned LOTS and have a new teacher who I admire and want to meet again at another course. If you have been thinking about doing this course, just do it.

A very interesting and insightful couple of days in Edinburgh, learning about and experiencing the physical and psychological benefit of slow, very focussed, soft tissue work. I'm certain I can apply these techniques immediately to some existing clients, as well as attracting others.
A very beneficial workshop.

As a Pilates teacher this work is an excellent addition to my understanding of the role of MFR in helping my clients attain greater flexibility and relief from pain. I was so impressed with Ruth & Tim’s extensive knowledge that I am keen to do more of their courses- we got through a great amount of work in a relaxed atmosphere with laughs while we worked. Their teaching was clear with plenty of time for questions and discussion -can’t wait for the next course!
